When last she judged German Shepherd dogs here through The Barbados Kennel Club’s All Breeds Championship Dog Show, German Shepherds were still at a height of popularity and she had 17 entries to critique. At this show she had only 6 German Shepherd dog entries and at recent shows here, there might have been fewer than 4 German Shepherds dogs and if I remember correctly, at one show there were none.

In the above photo, are the group winners she had selected and from these, she chose the Irish Setter, from the Gundog group as her Best in Show with the French Bulldog, from the Utility Group as the Reserve Best in Show. The best locally bred dog was the Rottweiler from the Working Group with a Dogue Des Bordeaux, locally bred, being awarded Best Puppy in Show.

According to published information from The Kennel Club, UK, Jenny Miller is approved to award Challenge Certificates in the UK to only 2 of the 20 plus breeds which were shown in Barbados on October 14th. These 2 breeds which she is approved by The Kennel Club, UK, to award the Challenge Certificates to are the German Shepherd Dog and the Irish Setter. There is currently only one Irish Setter being shown in Barbados.

Jenny Miller is approved to judge only the Gundog group. Barbados has 6 groups which are Terrier, Toy, Gundog, Hound, Utility and Working. The Pastoral group in the UK goes into the Working Group in Barbados. There are not many dogs nor breeds in the Gundog group and this is the second (out of 2) shows in the year where The Barbados Kennel Club has brought in a Gundog group judge!!! Only 3 breeds were shown in the Gundog group, the Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retriever and the Irish Setter with a total of only 6 dogs!

I did show under this judge on October 14th but only the Tibetan Terrier as I scratched the Bouvier Des Flandres entry. My scratching of my Bouvier entry had nothing to do with the judge.

I have shown Bouviers under her twice and when last she was here she did give one of my Bouviers the Working Group win at The German Shepherd Dog Club’s show. She was pleasant to me at the show.

This judge was the replacement judge for Zena Thorne-Andrews who cancelled the Barbados judging assignment. Zena Thorne-Andrews is approved to give Challenge Certificates to over 150 breeds in the UK and the only ones in Barbados that I see that she is not yet approved to award Challenge Certificates to by The Kennel Club, UK, are Dogue Des Bordeaux, Neopolitian Mastiff and the Australian Silky Terrier. She is also approved to judge all of the groups and also Best in Show. So even if she does not award Challenge Certificates to those 3 individual breeds above, she judges their groups so would have had exposure to the top dogs in those breeds.

During the day, there were very few visitors to the show. In the chairs were mainly the exhibitors, owners of the dogs and exhibitors’ friends and family. So besides a poor entry of exhibitors, there was a very poor entry of people coming to support the show.

There are reasons, other than whom the judge might be, why exhibitors choose not to return to The Barbados Kennel Club’s Championship shows and also for new comers to choose not to enter these shows.

The Barbados Kennel Club is a nonprofit organization. And I believe most members will agree that this club does little to promote pedigree dogs on the island except having dog shows.

Her critique of the dogs shown to her on October 14th, 2012, appears below with some pix. taken by one of my friends Franz Phillips. She did write very detailed critiques on the dogs she judged.

TERRIER GROUP

SCOTTISH TERRIER – Dog

Puppy

1st – Mr. S & Mrs. F.
