Chepam Valentina (Isabella) came first in class in the Saturday morning, June 21st, trials with The Barbados Dog Training Club\u2019s Beginner Obedience Course. This course is just a basic one and the dogs on it are kept on leash for the trials.<\/p>\n

I understand a Labrador came first in the Thursday class trials.<\/p>\n

Izzy will be 6 months old on July 2nd so this is a great start as she is still a very young puppy.<\/p>\n

The exercises are broken down into: heel on leash with the figure 8 and halts and turns and different speeds, the stand for examination, the recall, the long sit and the long down.
\nBecause there were so many participants on the class, I think close to 30, the class was broken into an evening class and a Saturday morning class. We did the Saturday morning class.
\nHer score was 195.5\/200. She got a little trophy and lots of hugs.
\nI plan to go on to the advanced obedience and also put her on a beginner\u2019s (she is the beginner, not me) agility class in September. Only very low jumps but she can enjoy the tunnels and other obstacles. <\/p>\n

Talking to other participants on the dog\/puppy training class, everyone seemed pleased with the results they had achieved from attending the classes.<\/p>\n

I was pleased to see The Barbados Dog Training Club award a little trophy to the most improved dog on the classes. It was a Rottie puppy who was full of energy and his handler Mark must have been very pleased with what they achieved. I hope Mark continues to work with this Rottie.<\/p>\n

Doing a basic obedience class can help with a lot of behaviour issues, jumping on people (tell the dog sit), being difficult at the vet, (tell the dog stand and stay), taking the dog for a walk (the heel command) and obviously going on to a more advanced course will strengthen the bond as it will have the off leash exercises, especially the recall, heel and stay exercises.<\/p>\n

With the trials at the end of the course, participants got the opportunity to test how they and their puppy\/dog have progressed with the training. To me, this is positive, as they can then see, at the end of the classes what they should still continue to work on.<\/p>\n

The participants I talked with all seemed happy and pleased with their progress and that is important. The B\u2019dos. Dog Training Club gets a lot of repeat clients and referrals from its clients for these group training obedience classes.
