October 11, 2015, was The Barbados Kennel Club’s second All Breeds Championship Dog Show for the year.<\/p>\n

This was Robin Newhouse’s first judging assignment in the island. In the UK, he is approved by The Kennel Club to judge the Working, Pastoral groups and Best in Show at championship level. Breeds such as the Japanese Shiba Inu, Border Collie, Akita, Bullmastiff, Great Dane and Rottweiler which were in our show ring are breeds he is approved by The Kennel Club to award Challenge Certificates to.<\/p>\n

He put up a locally bred Boxer (Working Group) for Best in Show<\/p>\n

A locally bred Rhodesian Ridgeback (Hound Group) went Reserve Best in Show<\/p>\n

Best puppy in Show was an imported Dobermann (Working Group)<\/p>\n

Best locally bred puppy in show was a Japanese Shiba Inu (Utility Group)<\/p>\n

There was only one breed and only one dog in the Terrier<\/span><\/strong> group, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.<\/p>\n

There was only the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breed in the Toy<\/span><\/strong> group.<\/p>\n

There were several Golden Retrievers, and Labrador Retrievers and an Irish Setter in the Gundog<\/span><\/strong> group.<\/p>\n

Just one lone Rhodesian Ridgeback was in the Hound<\/span><\/strong> Group.<\/p>\n

In the Utility<\/span><\/strong> group the breeds were the Akita, French Bulldog, and Japanese Shiba Inu.<\/p>\n

The bulk of the show\u2019s entries came from the Working<\/span><\/strong> Group which has now become an interesting, very competitive group again with breeds like the Border Collie, Bouvier Des Flandres, Bullmastiff, Dobermann, Dogue de Bordeaux, Giant Schnauzer, Great Dane, Rottweiler, Russian Black Terrier, German Shepherd, and Boxer. (There is no Pastoral group in Barbados and those breeds are included in the Working Group) So 11 different breeds were presented by their handlers in this group which had more breeds than all of the other groups combined!<\/p>\n

I think, in Barbados, the bulk of the dogs in the shows have usually\u00a0come from the Working Group.<\/p>\n

The German Shepherds were once so popular that they could put on their own breed shows, likewise the Boxers. At one time these breeds also had their own breed clubs. Today, I am seeing few German Shepherd dogs in the ring and also few Boxers.<\/p>\n

Akitas, from the utility group. were also once very dominant in the show ring, and top Akitas out of UK and USA lines used to come in just before shows and in full coats. They also had a breed club which is gone and today very few Akitas are seen in the show ring.<\/p>\n

2nd<\/sup> Mrs. D. Marshall\u2019s Thatcher Dance With Wolves<\/strong>. Excellent depth of chest. Well angled front and rear. Carrying too much weight and needs to strengthen on rear movement.<\/p>\n

This judge then short listed the breeds for his selection of the top dogs in the Working Group as follows:<\/p>\n

Bouvier Des Flandres, Dobermann, Russian Black Terrier, Rottweiler and Boxer and gave Group 1 to the Boxer and Group 2 to the Rottweiler.<\/p>\n

1st<\/sup> Mr. E. Franklyn\u2019s Freedom Diggah<\/strong>. Good body shape and outline. Movement could be truer. Too much head wrinkle and ears too high set, detracting from a true, square head.<\/p>\n

1st<\/sup> Mr. B. Lowe\u2019s Ch Royceprides Epic Dreamer At Cottage<\/strong>. Good ear set and placement but would like a slightly shorter muzzle to give the desired square head. Eyes a little to deeply set. Good neck and body shape. Needs to strengthen on the move.<\/p>\n

1st<\/sup> & Res CC. Mr. B.A. Bascombe\u2019s Nexgen Hold That Tiger<\/strong>. Body developing well for age with correct front and rear angles. Head developing but muzzle must not get any longer. Ears set a little high. Moved soundly.<\/p>\n

Best Puppy In Show was the Dobermann. Arisa Baltic Residence. Loved this youngster and, when she was handled correctly, she moved and showed with such style. Very well made and built for her age. Excellent head with good, almond eyes of good colour.\u00a0 Excellent body with good, straight topline. Great depth of chest with well sprung ribs. Excellent front and rear angles. Moved exceptionally well, when handled correctly. Should have a great future.<\/p>\n

So very well proportioned with excellent balance to body , great bone, correct feet, so very sound on the move. Excellent head and muzzle, correct eyes, good ear shape and placement. Strong neck. Correct front and rear assembly all giving true movement. Should make up to a Champion so very easily. Reserve in Group.<\/p>\n

Good tail set and carriage. Excellent type of coat. Head maturing well with good overall balance. So very sound on the move. Should do well.<\/p>\n

Excellent, well balanced head\u00a0 with good, broad muzzle.\u00a0 Good strong neck\u00a0 of correct length, going into good lay of shoulder. Exceptionally well made body with good depth and lay of rib, correct topline and loin.\u00a0 Excellent front and rear construction giving\u00a0 strong, true and clean movement.<\/p>\n

1st<\/sup> Mr. M. & Mrs. E. King\u2019s Tabor Ridge Princess Josie<\/strong>. Such a typical Boxer baby. Everything developing well with very good body and rib for age. Lovely head, good neck. Very sound on the move.<\/p>\n

I have found that spectators coming to a dogs’ show do not always supervise their children and children should always be supervised at these dog shows.<\/p>\n

Here is Isabelle at the show (her critique is above), a young Bouvier Des Flandres, with a child she had not met before <\/del>\u00a0but the child’s guardian asked if the child could come and speak to the Bouvier and also another group of children came to hug and pat her, with my permission and supervision.<\/p>\n
