Geoff Corish was on his first judging assignment to Barbados. In the ring he had about 50 dogs to go over and critique. This judge is approved by The Kennel Club, UK, to award Challenge Certificates in the UK to the Akita, French Bulldog, and the Miniature Schnauzer which were at our show. He is also approved by The Kennel Club, UK to judge the Utility, Terrier and Best in Show. He is a much travelled judge, judging all over the globe and is also scheduled to judge at the prestigious World Dog Show next year.

When any of these judges come to Barbados, they can award Challenge Certificates to any breed of dog they judge and likewise, they can withhold the Challenge Certificate.

He is reknown as a handler and I believe he has handled Champions in each of the seven groups in the UK. I can remember watching him handling a Giant Schnauzer in the Working Group at Crufts and I have also seen him with a Kerry Blue Terrier.

Geoff Corish’s main winners were:  French Bulldog (Utility Group) Best in Show

Boxer (Working Group) Reserve Best in Show and Best Locally Bred in Show

Bouvier Des Flandres (Working Group) Best Puppy in Show

Golden Retriever (Gundog Group) Best Locally Bred Puppy in Show

Here is his critique of the dogs:

TERRIER GROUP
Bull Terrier – Dog
Junior – 1st – Messrs. L. & C. Mark’s BLUEPOINT IMPERIAL BLACK, Imp. – Tricolour male. Nice size. Good bone. Very good neck and shoulders. Topline could be slightly more level. Strong head with good fill in. Excellent foreface. Good straight front. CC, BOB and Best in Group.

TOY GROUP
Yorkshire Terrier
Limit – 1st – Mr. E. & Mrs. F. Drake’s DANIEL- FIZZ Z UDOLI LIBERKU AT SHILOH – Imp. – Very nice for size. I really liked his head & expression. Good mouth, nice small ears. Excellent front. Nice fine bone. Very good topline. He was in good coat and his colour was very good too. CC, BOB & Best in Group.

GUNDOG GROUP
Retrievers (Golden) – Dogs
Minor Puppy – 1st – Mrs. L. Husband’s HOLDERS SAPPHIRE SKY – Well grown young dog. OK for size. Good bone. Good reach of neck and flows into a good topline. He is well ribbed. His movement was a little difficult to assess as he was slightly favouring one rear leg. But I am sure only temporarily. Should have a nice future. RCC & Best L/B Puppy in Show.
Novice – 1st – Mr. J.S. Corbin’s BUZZ LIGHTYEAR DE RIA VELA, Imp. – A really good type. I like his overall balance. He is straight in front and with good feet. Very good topline, to be critical just carries his tail a little high. His head is his good point. Dark eyes and well balanced. CC.

Retrievers (Golden) – Bitches
Minor Puppy – 1st – Mrs. A. Barnett’s THATCHERS RIVER DANCE – Obviously just a baby but so much to like. She has the most lovely head and expression. Excellent front. Good reach of neck, excellent topline. Must have a good future.
2nd – Mrs. J. Fields’ HOLDERS RUBY FIRE – Also a baby but little more immature to 1. Not as straight in front as the winner, but is similar in many ways. She has good bone and excellent feet. Just needs a little more time to come together and settle.
Limit – 1st – Mrs. L. Husbands & Mrs. J. Ray’s ANGELUSPARK HEAVENS GIFT TO THATCHER, Imp. – Nice bitch. Full of quality. A really good moving bitch. Excellent hindquarters which she uses on the move with a good driving action. Lovely head and that typical soft Golden expression. CC, BOB & Best in Group.

Open – 1st – Mrs. J. Ray’s SH.CH. AMIRENE MIDSUMMER DREAM OF THATCHER C.D. – 5 year old bitch. She has overall balance. Nicest of heads. Dark eye and nice soft expression. She has a good front and good bone & feet. She moves ok but was carrying a little too much weight which made her roll a little on the move. RCC & RBOB.

Retrievers (Labrador) – Bitches
Puppy – 1st – Mr. E. Maynard’s PITNEZE PRINCESS LEA, Imp. – Black bitch who I was very taken with. She has so much quality. Very happy with herself in the ring. She is balanced. Excellent coat and tail. Sound both ways. Must have a great future. RCC & BOB.
Limit – 1st – Mrs. Z. Gray-Marshall’s THEBERTON TITMOUSE OF ZINZARA – Black bitch and very feminine. She is a good mover both ways and also in profile. She has good bone and tight feet. Good neck though shoulder could be a little more laid back. Handled very well.
Open – 1st – Mrs. Z. Gray-Marshall’s SH.CH. CROSSCROYDE CALYPSO MAGIC FOR THEBERTON, Imp. – Black bitch. Ok for size. Good reach of neck. Excellent shoulders. Good front . Excellent firm topline. Well ribbed. Strong in loin. Tail could just be a little better carried. CC & BOB

Irish Setter – Dog
Open – 1st – Mr. & Mrs. A. Moore’s SH.CH. FEARNLEY FIRE STORM OF MOORLANDS C.D., Imp. – This Irish has the most lovely head and expression. Good reach of neck. Quite tall but well balanced. Excellent topline and carries his tail in the right place. He was in full coat and super body condition. CC, BOB & Reserve in Group.

HOUND GROUP
Dachshunds (Min.L/H) – Bitch
Open – 1st – Mrs. G. Wilson’s CUPCAKE CANDY AT WILSONBY, Imp. – Brindle bitch of a nice size. Long level topline. Good front with good bone. Nice head with sweetest of expressions. Was very sound on the move. CC & BOB.

Rhodesian Ridgebacks – Dogs
Open – 1st – Mr. O. Holder & Master K. Holder’s CH. CROWNRIDGE FLASH FORWARD –Very well balanced male. Good in head balance. Excellent front and good feet. Excellent topline. Sound coming and going and also impresses in profile movement. Well handled. CC, RBOB & Reserve in Group.
2nd – Mr. P. Atkinson’s CELTIC RIVER RADIUM – Slightly taller than winner and not going as well in profile moving. Again I like his head and expression. He also has good bone but feet not quite as good as winner. Firm in topline and carries his tail well. RCC.

Rhodesian Ridgebacks – Bitch
Open – 1st – Mrs. S.B. Hamilton-Outcalt’s CH. CELTIC RIVER FIZZ C.D. – I really liked this bitch. Feminine but with right amount of strength too. Lovely head. Strong muzzle. She is very sound both ways. Excellent topline and well handled. CC, BOB & Best in Group.

UTILITY GROUP
Akitas – Dogs
Limit – 1st – Mr. D.P. De B. Boyce’s DONKEMRE THOR – Brindle/White and all male. Moves so well in profile with true driving action. Very strong in head and well set ears. Good reach of neck. Excellent topline. Just tends to swing his front when he comes back to me. RCC.
Open – 1st – Mr. & Mrs. R.O. Alleyne’s HALF BLOOD PRINCE – This dog has a super head and expression. Correct forward placed ears. Not yet in full coat. Good reach of neck. Excellent topline. Tail could be a little tighter. CC & RBOB.

Akitas – Bitch
Junior – 1st – Mr. G. & Mrs. S. Spencer & Mr. A. Taylor’s MASSIMA’S PRIDE N JOY AT BARIMAS – 17 months old red/white bitch I liked very much. As yet needs a bit more maturity but all the basics are there and she should have a good career. I liked her head, very typical. Standing her front is good, but swings it a little on the move. But in profile has a good driving action. Well handled. CC & BOB.

Bulldog – Bitch
Novice – 1st – Mr. M. Cottrell’s BRITISH GLADIATOR BONASERA, Imp. – All white bitch. Ok for size. A little too long in body and topline is too exaggerated. She has good bone. Her eyes are clean. Excellent mouth. Moves ok behind but today seems a little lame in front. BOB.

French Bulldogs – Dog
Open – 1st – Mr. H. Jordan’s CH. JAFRAK PASSING SHIP, Imp – Brindle male. Super head and expression. Nice dark eye. Good pigment. He is sound. Correct topline for the breed. Good hindquarters. Well handled. CC, BOB, Best in Group and BEST IN SHOW.

French Bulldogs – Bitches
Puppy – 1st – Mr. H. Jordan’s JAFRAK WOWING THE CROWDS, Imp. – Dark brindle with most lovely head and expression. Well placed ears. Excellent mouth. Correct muzzle and with dark eyes. Straight front. Good neck and shoulder 7 months and needs to develop in rib but that will come with age. Should do well in the future. CC & RBOB.
OPEN – 1st – Mr. H. Jordan’s CH. JAFRAK DORADA, Imp. – Fawn and very feminine. Very good front and feet. Dark nails, not always seen. She has a good neck and shoulder.
She is short coupled and with a nice roach. Her head is balanced and with nice ear placement. RCC.

Japanese Shiba Inu – Dog
Junior – 1st – Mr. A. Taylor’s MASSIMA NO ONE GREATER – Tricolour dog of a good type. Free moving. Good topline. Good reach of neck. Front could be a little straighter both standing and moving. In full coat and excellent condition. CC & RBOB.

JAPANESE SHIBA INU – Bitch
Junior – 1st – Mr. G. & Mrs. S. Spencer & Mr. A. Taylor’s MASSIMA PROMISCUOUS GIRL AT BARIMAS – Really good moving bitch. Excellent straight front. Feet could be a little tighter. I like her head and expression. Nicely placed ears. Good topline and moves out really well in profile. Well handled. CC & BOB.

MINIATURE SCHNAUZERS – Dog
Open – 1st – Mr. R. & Mrs. J. Anderson’s CH. JAMROCK NATURAL MYSTIC – Very nice male with good overall balance. Short coupled. His head is long. Clean skull. Good front. His coat is a good hard texture with good leg furnishings. He moves well in profile but a little close behind. CC, BOB & Reserve in Group.

WORKING GROUP
Bouvier Des Flandres – Bitch
Puppy – 1st – Miss M. Ashby’s CHEPAM VALENTINA AT CALLIOPE, Imp. – A very sound moving young bitch of 10 months. Coat as yet a bit woolly but that will improve with age. Her head is really nice and of right proportions. Nice and square in outline. CC, BOB, Reserve in Group & Best Puppy in Show.

Bullmastiffs – Dogs
Limit – 1st – Mr. A. Moore’s FORTESQUE ARLINGTON – Brindle dog of a good size. He was a little unsettled on the day and could have settled a bit more moving. His head was well balanced and strong. Mouth was a little too undershot. He has a good front. Excellent topline and was in super body condition. RCC.
Open – 1st – Messrs. O. Holder & R. Straker’s CH. TREONE DARK SULTAN – Dark brindle dog. Very masculine head and well balanced. Dark eye. Good pigment. Good front and feet. Well ribbed. Sound coming and going. Could carry a little more body weight to his advantage. CC & RBOB.

Bullmastiffs – Bitch
Open – 1st – Mr. R. Wood’s WOODNEY DIANA WHITE – Fawn bitch and lots to like about her. Super outline. Good neck and shoulders. Good topline. Strong in loin. Good hindquarters. Straight front. With balanced head but just a little too undershot. CC & BOB.

Rottweilers – Dogs
Puppy – 1st – Dr. W.L. Welch’s ELTHOR DARK IGOR – Well grown puppy of 11 months. Well boned. Excellent body shape. Good front. Very good head and mouth. Good topline. Would just like him a touch shorter. CC & BOB.
2nd – Mr. O. Holder’s MONIFA STAND AND DELIVER – 10 months old and not as mature as 1and similar in many ways. He is sound. Good front. Excellent bone. Good topline. Very good head but again could be a touch shorter coupled.
3rd – Mr. G. & Mrs. S. Spencer’s BARINDI UNSTOPPABLE – Very much the baby of the group and very raw at this stage. I liked a lot about him. He was shorter coupled than 1 and 2 but he lacked the rib and body weight of the winner and it was this that held him back. I would be very interested to see him in another 12 months.
Open – 1st – Mr. R.T. Alleyne’s RICHWOOD ARRELEUS’ FIRE – Very good type. Good reach of neck. Firm in topline. Good front. Well ribbed. Very good hindquarters. Standing he presents a good picture but today his movement let him down both ways and gave the impression he didn’t want to be here. RCC & RBOB.

Rottweilers – Bitches
Minor Puppy – 1st Dr. W.L. Welch’s ELTHOR DARK KENDRA – 7 months old young bitch and moves and shows so well. In super condition. She has good bone. Good reach of neck. Excellent topline. Her head is well balanced and strong in the fore face.
Puppy – 1st – Mr. O. Holder’s MONIFA SHADES OF PINK – A really promising puppy. Needs to settle a bit in movement. But I liked her outline. Strong in loin. Well ribbed. Super body condition. I liked her head and expression. Good mouth. CC
2nd – Mr. R. Bascombe’s KENTRIDGE MISS MAYWEATHER – This bitch is quite immature at the moment and needs to fill out a bit more. She is a good mover. Her front is good as she is behind. Her head is balanced though I would like a bit more strength in muzzle and not as good in expression as 1.RCC
Junior – 1st – Mr. R.T. Alleyne’s RICHWOOD BEA’S A BURNING – Ok for size. Her head is good and has a good bite. Straight in front. Good reach of neck. But today she didn’t settle on the move and she was not in good coat condition.
Limit – 1st – Mr. A. Maynard’s ELTHOR DARK QUINKA – 2 ½ year old and didn’t seem too happy today. She is a good size. Ok in head and expression. Excellent mouth. Good front and feet. Good topline but tends to fall away too steeply in croup. In very good condition.
Open – 1st – Mr. R. Bascombe’s MISS LACY – Ok for size and overall balance. Good reach of neck. Excellent topline. Well ribbed. Short in loin. Good hindquarters. Sound going away but not quite so good coming towards me.
2nd – Mr. R.T. Alleyne’s RICHWOOD AKINA’S FIRE – Taller bitch than 1 and also longer in body. I preferred her head and expression. She has a good reach of neck. Excellent topline and thought she was my winner. However on the move she did not move so well and let herself down. What a pity!

German Shepherd Dogs – Bitches
Puppy – 1st – Mr. & Mrs. L. Harris’ SKYE COCO – Young bitch of 10 months and of a finer type. Today she was in poor body condition and needs a lot more body weight. This shows in the movement. When she bodies up I am sure she can look so much better. RBOB.
Open – 1st – Mr. & Mrs. L. Harris’ CH. MONIFA BRANDI – Bitch of 4 years and like previous class winner is very narrow all through and needs more rib and better condition. On the move she didn’t move well at all and was all over the place and gave her handler a tough time. BOB.

Boxers – Dogs
Junior – 1st – Miss J. Wilson’s SUNDIAL’S SUN GOD APOLLO AT KAIBO – Red/White dog and very stylish on the move too. Right amount of neck. Excellent front. I liked his head rise of skull and muzzle too. Looks very good. I would just like a slightly better topline. CC, BOB, Best in Group, Reserve Best in Show and Best L/B Dog in Show.
Open – 1st – Miss J. Wilson’s CH. WORTHINGTON WISH ME LUCK C.D. – Red/White 6 years old chap and a little heavy in condition. Good neck and shoulders. Well balanced head. Good mouth nice and broad. Good bone. Just moved a bit close behind today. RCC.

Boxers – Bitches
Junior – 1st – Ms. B. Hoyos’ RUBY SCARLET – Red/White youngster of 7months. Needs to mature a bit more. She is so feminine in head and expression. Excellent pigment. Sound when she settled to moving.
Novice – 1st – Mrs. L. Carrillo’s SUNDIAL’S PACHA MAMA – Red/White well made bitch in profile moves ok, but up and down she tends to pull her front. She is a nice size. She is well balanced. Short coupled and presents a good outline. For me she lacks a bit of quality in her head.
Open – 1st – Miss G. Leach’s CH. WORTHINGTON’S PRETTY N PEACH – Rich red bitch. Nicely made with good neck into good shoulders. Firm in topline. She is sound coming and going and in super condition. Lack of white on her head gives the impression of being plain but on examination she is not. CC.
2nd – Mrs. B. Foster’s RUGBY MULAN – Red/White and out to give her handler a hard time. Clown springs to mind! She is a nice shape when she stands. Good neck and shoulder. But was silly on the move and never settled. It did give the audience some entertainment! RCC.

BROOD BITCH: Mrs. B. Foster’s RUGBY MULAN.
Well what a great brood this bitch has been as today her son was BOB and daughter was shown in Novice and I am told there are others! I suppose you could call her ‘The goose that laid the golden eggs.”
