Jeff Horswell judging dogs at a Barbados show
The first time Jeff Horswell judged dogs in Barbados was on October 9, 2011, at a Barbados Kennel Club’s All Breed Championship Dog Show.
He told me that he had, however, visited Barbados before his judging assignment.
Jeff is a breed specialist for Dachshund, Field Spaniel, Great Dane and Irish Wolfhound and an all rounder for other breeds. I believe he is authorised to give Challenge Certificates for approximately 70 breeds in the UK, across 6 groups.

TERRIER GROUP
Bull Terriers – Dogs
Minor Puppy
1st – Miss S. Laynes’s KINGLISCH ICE THE CRUSHER – Promising dog, immature in body as to be expected. Well shaped head, well filled under eyes. Dark Eyes. Well made front, broad cheat. Just needs to firm in topline. Moves with a lengthy stride. CC & Reserve in Group.
Open
1st – Mr. N. Harrison’s CH. KINGDOM’S POWERS – Masculine dog in very hard condition. Slightly short in foreface and mouth not quite right. Strong neck. Broad chest. Slightly long in back. Very good ribs. Hind angulation balances front. True mover. Res.CC.
Bull Terriers – Bitches
Minor Puppy
1st – Mr. N. Harrison’s KINGDOM’S WHISKY – Really good bitch, feminine, but with plenty of strength. Well filled egg shaped head. Good neck, super front. Just a little bit long in the back. Well bent stifle and low hocks. Just needs to settle in hind action. CC, BOB, Best in Group, Best Puppy in Group & Best L/B Puppy in Show.
Scottish Terriers – Bitches

1st – Mrs. J. Parris’ MILLINGSFORD HOLLYBERRY – Feminine bitch, true moving out and back with good length stride. Long head with strong jaws. Super eye and expression. Ears could be smaller. Enough neck. Good legs & feet. Slightly long in back. Well set tail. Very good hindquarters. CC & BOB.
Staffordshire Bull Terriers – Dogs
Junior
1st – Mr. I. Watson’s COBBYBULL MR DEXTER – Free moving, beautifully conditioned masculine dog. Broad scull, expressive eyes. Ears could be better. Strong neck. Well laid shoulder. Just needs to develop in body still. Well turned stifle with low set hocks. CC & BOB

Australian Silky Terriers – Dogs

1st – Mr. S. & Mrs. F. Drakes’ CH. BALKANA THE FLYING FINN AT SHILOH – Masculine dog, lengthy, well balanced head with flat scull. Ears ok. Balanced angulation. Topline not his fortune. Very good colour. Well muscled rear. CC & Reserve in Group.
Australian Silky Terriers – Bitches

1st – Mr. S. & Mrs. F. Drakes’ BALKANA LILY AT SHILOH – Feminine bitch of good colour and when taken at right pace is a good mover. Like her head, flat scull. Good angulation front & rear. Super body with a level topline. Could just use her tail more. CC, BOB & Best in Group.

1st – Miss S. Blandford’s HOTHERSALL’S DANCING QUEEN – Very much a baby of 6 months. Feminine head, super ears & a fine muzzle. Well made front. Level topline, correct ribs. Needs a bit more hind angulation. True mover front & rear. CC, BOB & Best Puppy in Group.

1st – Miss E. Blanchard’s CH. HOTHERSALL’S ATHENA – Dainty feminine bitch. Ears slightly high set, but well fringed. Good neck. Level topline. Plenty of angulation & in silky coat. Movement could be tidier. RCC.

Fairly similar in many ways, especially in heads.
1st – Mrs. J. Ray’s SH.CH. FENWOOD LOUIS VUITTON OF THATCHER C.D. – He has just a bit more width to him and more fill of chest. Well laid shoulder and lengthy upper arm. Holds a better topline than 2. Just a little over angulated in the rear. True out and back. CC & BOB.
2nd – Mrs. L. Husbands’ THATCHERS STORMY KNIGHT C.D. – Nice proportions and again has a very well made front. Has a good turn of stifle and low set hocks. Nice tight feet. RCC
Retrievers (Golden) – Bitches

1st – Mrs. J. Ray’s SH.CH. THATCHERS STORM IN A TEACUP C.D. – Feminine bitch with a lovely eye and expression. Could have a slightly better shoulder, flips her front on the move and looses topline. She has a very good rear which powers her around ring and true going away. CC.

1st – Mr. E. Maynard’s ROCHEBY REGAL ROSE – Absolutely sound feminine bitch, 10 months old and could just come up on leg a little more and fill in her topline. Well laid shoulder. Lengthy neck. Barrel ribs. Super coat. Strong rear. Well set tail. Super temperament. CC, BOB, Best Puppy & Reserve in Group.

1st – Miss A. Corbin’s PARADISE CASH AND PRIZES – Feminine, very good moving bitch. Head could be better, slightly receding in skull and brows pronounced. So not quite a one piece look to it. Fair neck and front. Deep chest. Firm topline. Well made rear. Can just muscle up. Very good tail action. CC & BOB

1st – Mr. & Mrs. A. Moore’s FEARNLEY FIRE STORM OF MOORLANDS – Very handsome dog. Lengthy and lean head. Super eye. Lengthy neck. Well laid shoulder. Deep chest. Topline is firm with slight slope. Well turned stifle with low hocks. Quite true on move and goes with even stride. Correct Irish temperament. CC, BOB & Best in Group.

1st – Senator P. & Mrs. J. Gilkes’ ANZAC’S DIAMOND AT KINOLA – Feminine bitch and moves well. Well set ears. Lengthy neck. Fair front. Needs more width of chest and tends to turn feet out very slightly. Chest to elbow. Well set tail. Good turn of stifle and low hock. Could be slightly more compact.

1st – Senator P. & Mrs. J. Gilkes’ CH. KINOLA’S CLEO – Type workmanlike bitch with a most appealing head, eye and expression. Lengthy neck. Well laid shoulder. Turns feet out slightly. Chest to elbow. Holds better topline than 2 and has better rear. Would like a shorter back. CC, & BOB & Best in Group.
2nd – Senator P. & Mrs. J. Gilkes’ CH. KINOLA’S CALYSTA – Workmanlike sort of a bitch who has flashes of pulling herself into a good shape. Slightly more compact than 1. Slightly plain in head. Good neck. Needs more width to chest. Topline could be better. Has good ribs. Low hocks. RCC

1st – Mrs. S.B. Hamilton-Outcalt’s CH. CROWNRIDGE RED REGENT (AI) C.D.) – Fit and powerful moving dog. Has a very good head. Lengthy neck. Could have more angulation front and rear and is slightly steep in croup. Firm topline. Chest to elbow. Correct rib. CC.
2nd – Mr. P. Atkinson’s CH. BALLYRIVER MILTON – Strong dog, nice proportions. Is rather short in muzzle. Very good neck. Fairly good front. Slightly upright in pastern. Ok for chest. Flat in croup and not width of thigh of 1. Moves with easy stride. RCC.

1st – Mrs. S.B. Hamilton-Outcalt’s CROWNRIDGE RED RED RED (AI) – Very good type bitch. Feminine head. Strong neck. Could have slightly better shoulder. Well filled chest. Slightly tied on move but true rear and a very easy stride. Very good body and topline. Enough hind angulation. CC, BOB & Reserve in Group.
2nd – Mr. P. Atkinson’s CH. ROTTZRIDGE CELTIC PRINCESS – Pleasing head, ears a bit large. Very good neck. Chest could be better filled. Fair underline. Correct croup. Not bend in stifle as 1. RCC.

1st – Mr. D. Marshall’s ID GRIZZLEY nice shape pup with a good head, can still grow into his ears. Enough neck. Well laid shoulder. Deep & broad chest. Firm topline. Just needs to firm up and movement come together. RCC.
Junior
1st – Mr. R. & Mrs. A. Herbert’s YOSHI YANG – Easy moving dog once settled. Masculine head, ears could be smaller and better set. Moderate and balanced angulation. Firm topline. Just needs to body up. CC.
Limit
1st – Mr. W. Smith’s MAN OF GONDOR – Mature 5 year old dog with tendency to drop his tail. Masculine head with hooded ears. Plenty of neck. Well laid shoulder. A bit soft in topline. Would like slightly more leg for his body length. Broad chest. Super ribs. Not rear of Junior dog.

1st – Mr. W. Smith’s DONKEMRE VENUS – Very good bitch, just lacks muscle. Feminine head, ears ok. Good neck. Well laid shoulder. Super Body. Firm topline. Well made rear. Low hocks. Tail ok. Moves very well. CC & BOB.

1st – Mr. H. Jordan’s JAFRAK PASSING SHIP – 8 months old dog who moves very well. Super face, large bat ears. Open nostrils. Very good eye and expression. Very good skull. Enough neck. Broad in chest. Well sprung ribs. Just a bit rounded in croup. Enough hind angulation. CC & BOB.
Japanese Shiba Inu – Dog

1st – Mr. A. Taylor’s CALICELESTI THE ONE N’ONLY AT MASSIMA – Light moving dog of excellent proportions. Immature in head, neat ears, correct shaped eye but could be more obliquely set. Correct thick neck. Feet flat. Firm topline. Super tail. Well angulated front and rear. CC, BOB, Best in Group & RESERVE BEST IN SHOW.

1st – Mr. J. Grazette’s FUNKY FREIDA WOT A THRILLER – Strong, feminine bitch. Lengthy head, almond eyes, planes not parallel. Good neck. Well laid shoulder. Chest to elbow. Long in loin. Hard topline. True front, slightly weak in hock. Maybe too flat in croup. CC & BOB.

1st – Mr. D. Cobham’s Foul Bay Sea Hawk – Very good young dog who moves very well. Correct proportions muzzle to skull. Ears could be better. Broad chest. Well laid shoulder. Good body. Level topline. Stands a bit cow hocked but good turn of stifle and hock.
Maiden
1st – Mr. H. Leacock’s EMMERTON NERO – Super temperament. Masculine head, square skull. Too far undershot. Lacks body and very weak in his rear and almost too short in back. Nice legs and feet.
Limit
1st – Messrs. T. Ifill & O. Holder’s TREONE DARK SULTAN – Masculine dog of very good type and moves very well. Maybe slightly short in muzzle. Grand neck. Very good front. Looses topline slightly on the move. Deep body. Long ribs. Fairly good rear. CC, BOB, Reserve in Group & Best L/B in Show.
2nd – Mr. M. Jones’ PRINCE CASPIAN – Masculine dog. Has a square skull, nice muzzle. Broad chest. Almost too short in back and needs more turn of stifle. Like his front action.

1st – Mr. P.R.P. Evelyn Q.C.’s CH. BRAEAARON WALLACE AT ARDHUB TO HOTHERSALL – Rather a heavy type dog who excels in profile action. Square skull, short in muzzle and eyes too light. Very well placed ears. Strong neck. Front ok. Too steep in croup. Well bent stifle and hock. Decent feet. RCC.

1st – Dr. W. Welch’s ELTHOR DARK ORLANO – Masculine dog with well balanced, dry head. Good profile gait, but is also rather long in loin and back. Correct neck. Well filled chest. Moderate hind angulation. Slack topline but super tail.

1st – Mr. S. Harrison’s LONNE BIGGZ – typy masculine dog of correct proportions. Dry skull. Good eye and expression. Lengthy neck, slightly upright in carriage and shoulder. Deep chest. Scores in firmness of topline. Could have a stronger rear. RCC.
2nd – Dr. W. Welch’s ELTHOR DARK NAM – Different type dog with a tendency to look a bit boxy at times and is a bit slack in topline. Nice head, correct neck. Good width of chest.

1st – Dr. W. Welch’s CH. JUFFTHER DREAM LOVER – Quite spectacular in side gait. He really covers the ground with ease. Masculine head, maybe a bit full in cheek. Good front. Super neck. Broad chest. Firm topline. Enough hind angulation. Tail carriage not correct. CC, BOB, Best in Group & BEST IN SHOW.

1st – Dr. W. Welch’s ELTHOR DARK QUINNA – excellent outline and is so sound with reach and drive. Feminine head. Strong neck. Well made front and rear and holds firm topline. CC.
2nd – Mr. R. Bascombe’s MISS LACY – Type bitch. Needs to develop in chest and firm up in topline. Good neck. Well laid shoulder. Ribs go far enough back. Strong rear, full of muscle. RCC.
Maiden
1st – Mr. A. Weekes’ HOPEVIEW MISS QUEENBE – Feminine bitch with lots of angulation, she tends to sink into herself stood. Like her head. Good neck. Good legs. Tends to run up slightly moving. Needs just to firm up. Fairly true out and back.

1st — Mr. M. Worrell’s SILKENWOOD ESKO – Correct proportions, pretty hard to assess his movement. Lengthy head. Good neck. Needs to develop in chest. Upright in shoulder, long well angled upper arm. Hind angulation ok. RCC.

1st – Mr. M. Worrell’s LORK AUS DER BRUNNENSTRASSE – Very good dog for type. Masculine head. Strong neck. Well laid shoulder. Good chest. Bit weak in pastern. Withers could be more pronounced. Firm topline. Long lower thigh. True on move, could just have a bit more power. CC & BOB

1st – Miss G. Leach’s WORTHINGTON’S PRETTY N PEACH – Just slightly better in topline and rear as yet. Feminine head with strength in muzzle. Super neck. Well filled chest which reaches elbow. Fairly true for age. CC, BOB & Best Puppy in Group.
2nd – Miss M. Farmer’s WORTHINGTON’S PUNCH A CRÈME – Has a very good front with good fill of chest. Super legs and feet. Chest to elbow. Feminine head.

1st – Miss G. Leach’s CH. SEEFELD SEA GODDESS OF WORTHINGTON – 6 year old bitch who presents a very good outline. Feminine in head, strong neck. Well made front with good fill of chest. Just a bit slack in topline now. Moderate hind angulation. But goes well. RCC.
BEST VETERAN
Mrs. S. Leacock’s SH.CH. BENATONE SECRET MISSION OF THEBERTON – Grand Lab, very well made. Super head. Big ribs. Correct coat, went well, holding a level topline.
2. Mrs. J. Ray’s SH.CH. BURPHAM WINTER STORM OF THATCHER C.D. – Nice proportions on Golden Retriever. Just a bit narrow through. Slightly domed in skull. Strong neck. Keeps level topline.
