The new White House puppy has finally arrived and it is one of the breeds the family was considering.  It did not, however, come from a shelter (as had originally being talked about).

The Portuguese Water Dog is considered a rare breed and it would be unusual to pick up a PWD from a shelter.

The 6 month old puppy was a gift from Senator Edward Kennedy who owns 3 PWDs, Sunny, Splash and Cappy.

Considered a good pet for people with allergies, the breed is also one of the very playful, rambunctious breeds so I am sure the family will have lots of fun with it.

Of course, they will have their trainers and staff to help them

The Obamas are going to make a donation to the D.C. Humane Society, as a gesture for not taking in a puppy from one of the shelters.  And those PE..  people, wonder what they will say about that!  But who cares anyway 🙂

GSD breeder, Linda Brown,  was thrilled when Joe Biden purchased a German Shepherd puppy from her.  But now she says her life has been threatened, and she has been investigated and scored by people because of the sale.

She says the backlash came from people who felt tha the Bidens should have rescued a puppy from a shelter.  Yes, and PETA had a say as well, they ran an ad “Buy one, get one killed”.

This article came from Philadelphia’s Local News of April 10th.

Interesting story with a happy ending.

In November last year, an Australian cattle dog was on a boat with its owners when due to rough seas, “Sophie” fell overboard and the owners thought, after being unable to find her, that she must have drowned with the rough waves.

“Sophie” however, swam 5 nautical miles to St. Bees Islands (amazing as the waters were known to be shark infested) and it is thought that she survived from eating baby goats (from the carcasses found).

She was eventually captured by a ranger and when the news spread, her owners make contact to see whether it could be their beloved collie.  And it was “Sophie” who must be delighted to be a “house” dog getting her meals served in a bowl once again.

There are actually dog life jackets which might be useful to people taking their dogs on boating trips as the bright colours might help in finding the dog and the buoyancy save the dog’s life.

Jovi and Ody visited Phoenix whose human mother had life jackets.  I did laugh when I saw the jackets and yes, of course, all dogs know how to swim.  What they might not know is how to swim to the lowest point in a pool, or pond, or wherever, to be able to get out of the water.

I enjoyed a stroll with one of my friends on the “Barbados Boardwalk”.  Lots of tourists were enjoying the beauty of the ocean stretch from Rockley to Hastings, the reefs and the warmth of our sunshine.  I do wish the “Boardwalk” could be extended further.  Yes, it costs a lot of money but we are a tourist destination so things we can do to make our guests’ stay more enjoyable should be money well invested. Many Barbadians may never bother to walk on the beaches because the beaches are taken for granted but the ones who are returning “home” are more appreciative.

The “Boardwalk” carries signs saying “No dogs, bicycles, skating, rollerblading, vending” and I was amused when I saw 2 dogs with collars accompanied by, I think, their owners who went off to swim in a nearby pool.

The dog in the photo stopped right by the sign (where no dogs allowed was written) turned around and went back to the beach. 🙂

Good dog! 🙂

This pix. did cheer me up after posting the earlier one.

At most shows  people, especially childen,  want to hug my Bouviers and once the Bouviers are not immediately going back into the ring, I let the children enjoy them.

Thank you George for sending me this pix. of your family friends, Max and Ruth, with Rita at the show.

Just coming from a dog show where people have imported all kinds of different breeds, and they and the locally bred dogs shown are obviously lovingly cared for, trained and prepared for the show, I was appalled this morning to see the pix. below in my favourite Barbados blog:

Barbados Free Press

Their heading on March 27th, was “Barbados Tourist upset over Hanged Dog Cruelty…..”

The pix. was softened by Photoshop but imagine the horror of hikers enjoying the beauty of Barbados and a lot of these hikers were tourists, to come across a dead dog hanging by his neck on a tree.

A terrible sight

A terrible sight

It is difficult to imagine the agony and suffering this poor animal would have endured.

“Man’s best friend”, I would hate to imagine how the person who did this to a poor animal, would treat other humans.

And the hiker who took the pix. posted them to the BBC World news, The British Press, Fox News Network, The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Ellen Degeneres Show and the Canadian Press.

I would hope that if there is someone who witnessed this extreme act of cruelty and was not a part of it, they would report it.  It could be reported to

Barbados Crime Stoppers

Just a few lines to congratulate the winners:

BIS winner: Miniature Schnauzer Ch. Risepark Pretty Smart Guy at Jamrock owned by Ricky and Jolene Anderson

RBIS winner: Labrador Retriever Kelleygreens Aztec Super Dog owned by C. MacPherson.

Just a puppy, at 11 months.  This breed will compete in the Working Group

When full grown, this breed may weigh between 100 – 150 lbs.

Like the other dogs, in the recent posts, he was at Waterford, for handling classes.

It was great to see the number of new people and new dogs at Waterford on March 8th.

A lot of new people come with various breeds and do not return after the shows. There are so many other activities on and to have a top show dog in top condition involves dedication.  If it is a coated breed, the work of the coat, either stripping or combing and cutting to the correct length.  The training and socialising of the dog is a lot of work, teaching it to stack and gait.

Because a dog has come from the UK does not mean it is top quality. But there were several imported dogs and puppies at Waterford.

l to r Rupert (Savoy) was there with his sisters Rhapsody and Rita
