Ch. Araki Miss Conduct at Calliope in Barbados

Tibetan Terrier enjoying life in Barbados

On November 28th, my Tibetan Terrier, Ch. Araki Miss Conduct at Calliope passed the first leg, A, of the Novice CD Obedience title. She got a score of 177 out of 200 (170 is the passmark). Also passing CD Novice Obedience legs were a Golden Retriever owned by Jean Ray, a mixed breed owned by Brenda Kaufman, and a Rhodesian Ridgeback owned by Sarah Hamilton.

I usually train my dogs with The B’dos. Dog Training Club. The trials are scored by the judges they appoint. Currently, in Barbados, anyone seeking to achieve the CD obedience title will have to achieve this through attending the trials set by The B’dos. Dog Training Club and being scored through a judge appointed by this club. The CD title has part A, B, and C. My understanding of this is that B and C can be marked harder than leg A. And different judges will be used to score the dogs to achieve the CD title.

I believe in starting obedience training with my dogs when they are puppies. And when they become young adults, they have the basic training in commands to run in agility and also to pass obedience at a more advanced level.

Passing Novice can be a challenge as it has exercises which are done off leash and once the leash is taken off the dog for the exercise, the handler is only allowed to touch the dog to move it from one area to another for another exercise. Between exercises, the handler can praise the dog but cannot motivate and reward by offering food, as no food is allowed in the obedience ring.

Tibby has settled down now in obedience. She was a zoomer before. She always does a very fast recall, but as a puppy would do the recall and then do things like zoom off, out of the ring and pose on the high walk way of the agility equipment. That particular agility obstacle was never introduced to her at that time, but because she is a Tibetan Terrier, I suspect she loves heights that other breeds might be afraid of.

I have achieved 4 CD titles with Bouviers so I am experienced handler and competitor in the obedience ring.

Judging for quality

Now is this show quality?

I saw this on Facebook today and smiled. The print is rather small but the judge in the picture is saying “Now that is what I call show quality”

Bullmastiff puppies, born September 23, 2012, and registered with The Barbados Kennel Club.  They have had their first innoculation and have been wormed.

I have removed the breeder’s contact information as my understanding is that all puppies from the above litter are in their new homes.

Visiting UK friends with Bouviers

Ch. Calliope Rhapsody C.D. and Ch. Calliope Rita C.D,. 2012

Going on cruises is the “in” thing in today’s world. UK Bouvier friends, Farleycross kennel, visited Barbados for a day. I collected them from the Port and brought them to my home to see my Bouviers. I drove them around the island a bit and we had lunch on the East coast but they really did not see much of the island as their request was to see my Bouviers and my home and they seemed to also enjoy looking at exotic plants and the trees in my grounds.
The Bouviers in the picture are the progeny from a bitch puppy I imported from them and a male I imported from Holland: Ch. Farleycross So Far So Good of Calliope and Ch. Rick Lois From the Dogsfarm at Calliope. I kept 2 puppies from the litter and made both up as Champions and also both achieved the obedience novice C.D. titles.

They were aware that I had imported a Tibeten Terrier and were amused by her. This Tibetan Terrier is non dog agressive and very full of herself and the Bouviers, after she settled in, play with her. She is also made up as a Champion and is working towards the CD novice obedience title.

UK visitors who are dog lovers

Belinda and Jim in Barbados

About 2 years ago when Belinda and her husband James were coming to Barbados she contacted me through this blog as she would have attended a dog show if there were any at the time of her visit. At that time, we would have had agility and obedience training going on but no conformation shows.

She and her husband have Pugs and a French Bulldog. Sarabellew Pugs and French Bulldogs

I was happy to talk with them and also give them some tropical fruits like mangoes, pawpaw and miniature golden apples, and show them where the show grounds are, so if they return to Barbados and a show is on, they can find the area.

Although they have visited Barbados several times now, I took them to a place on the East coast that they had not seen before. And they enjoyed the sunshine and sea breezes as well as our locally brewed beer.

At a recent show, there were some UK visitors who visited Barbados on a cruise and stopped in at the show instead of touring the island. Unfortunatley, they could not stay for the group and best in show judging as they had to return in the early afternoon to their ship. Some local shows do get overseas guests, especially when the shows are promoted through flyers or other media that reach the tourists.

Of course, our shows in Barbados are small in the number of exhibits to UK shows but the UK dog lovers who might have dogs of the same breeds being exhibited, and might also know the judges, still enjoy themselves.

Tibetan Terrier "Tibby"

Here is Tibby on the pause table on an agility course

“Tibby” is now made up as a Champion. She won 2 out of 2 Best Puppy in Show under Jeff Horswell and Robin Searle and also the Utility Group under Robin Searle. Her third Challenge Certificate came from Valerie Foss.

She loves agility and we have been doing mainly obstacles as she is still young for a lot of jumps.

She is very easy to train.

Like my Bouviers, Tibby’s favourite is the tunnel.

Margaret on May 18th, 2012

In Barbados, a group headed by Adrian Ward, do general dog training but seem particularly focused in working dog activities and development: BGI K9 Group. I know Adrian and he is a person whom I like and I have respect for as a trainer. He is a very experienced trainer with overseas exposure and training. His areas of interest includes Schutzhund and French ring sport.

He had a Malinois on the same CD classes that I had my Bouvier Des Flandres Rita on. Rita, to date, was the most indifferent Bouvier I have had doing CD. I have achieved CD titles with 4 of my Bouviers. Rita will naturally guard a gate at home and be very fast to chase anything on my property which she feels does not belong, like monkeys. But do the repetitive heel work and other boring stuff when she was off leash, was a challenge. Rita did achieve the CD title and she is also a conformation champion and I thank Adrian for the help he gave me in the ring when I training her. Both of us had a laugh about Rita and it is possible that Rita also had a laugh about us, especially when the leash was taken off!

Currently, in Barbados, certain breeds have been getting a negative rap.

When Pitbulls, as in a recent case, or other breeds are not properly secured and come off their property and bite people, it is a very serious matter.

I feel that all dogs should be secured by being on their own enclosed property or if out in the public, be under their owner’s control and on a leash. There are pitbull owners who say their breed makes a lovely family pet so it could come back to the environment, breeding, and how the Pitbulls were trained. And in reading a newspaper we do not always get the full story but, to me, once the dog is outside of its property and not on a leash and controlled by a person and bites someone, the dog is at fault and the owner is also at fault. Especially if it happens more than once.

I also feel that children, especially very young children, should not be left unsupervised with dogs, regardless of the breed and size of the dog.

Certain breeds excel at working sports, for example, most dogs categorised in the Barbados Working Group, just as certain breeds excel at scenting and hunting and these can be expected in the Hound group. The Gundog group dogs should retrieve easily as that is what they were bred to do, the Toy group has the companion dogs, the Utility has a mix of breeds bred to do various things and the Terrier group has its own characteristics.

I enjoyed this video. A French Bulldog standard puts this breed as being around 28 lbs. The breed is described as being “clown like” and it is one of the 15 high profile breeds, out of a possible 195 breeds, being watched in the UK in conformation shows for health issues associated with this breed. There are a few French Bulldogs in Barbados.

I never expected to see a French Bulldog doing any kind of working trials. But this video shows that a small package with a big mind can achieve unexpected things. Of course, you need an excellent trainer who believes in the dog to develop specific traits needed for the working trials. I am very impressed with the dog and its trainer.
