That is a very nice Rott. which should do well in the show ring.
What a head on a dog.
Let’s call it the HEADMASTER.
Seen in “Today’s” news, is the story of the world’s most expensive dog.
A Tibetan Mastiff was sold for US$582,000 to a young Chinese millionaire, a Ms. Wang. Yangtze River Number Two is 18 months old. He was purchased from the Qinghai province of northwest China. Yangtze was picked up from the Xi’an airport in China’s Shaanxi province, where lots of dog lovers had gathered to see him, along with the motorcade of 30 Black Mercedes Benz cars.
Reports say that Ms. Wang plans to mate Vangtze with another Tibetan Mastiff she owns.
This breed is considered a fairly rare breed and I noticed it recently was introduced to Crufts in the UK. I also saw it compete for the first time at Westminster, in USA, last year.

The earlier record for the most expensive dog was held by a Labrador, Lancelot Encore who was cloned from a dead dog named Lancelot. A family in Florida paid US $155,000 for him.
I look at it this way, if people have the money to spend, they can make the choices about how they spend it and once the money is not spent on areas that would hurt or destroy other humans, I am happy for them.
A USA family paid close to US$10,000 for an eleven month old Bouvier Des Flandres who was specially trained to help their five year old autistic child.
Carter, a child who does not speak, was heard to say “wait” and “hold” to the Bouvier, Corbin.
Before the family had the dog, the family had a problem getting Carter from the car to the park. But now walking with the dog, Carter goes to the park without a fight or throwing tandrums and swings on the park’s swingset.
The problem now is that the child’s school is going to court to prevent the child from bringing the service dog to school. I have not seen the results of the court hearing as yet.
The case was discussed on Fox news but the video recording of it which was embedded here was no longer available after September 12th
Guess this is a real case of where the Bouvier Des Flandres was wanted for its character and not its looks. As the service dog’s coat is shaved, it really did not look like a Bouvier.
I don’t know how the matter was settled in the law courts but I hope the school allowed the child to keep the dog, as bonding with the dog seemed to have very positive results for the autistic child.
Bouviers are a multi purpose breed. In the past pulling milk carts in Holland and herding cattle. In today’s world, they are used for functions such as guarding, as guide dogs for the blind and therapy dogs.
Here’s a link to a blog carrying a picture of the child and the Bouvier.
I hope, in the end, the child is allowed to attend a school with the Bouvier but I also understand that allowing the child to attend school with a dog might raise issues with some of the other children at school.
But it seems like a great encouraging start for the child to fit into society better.
This Rabbi and his audience got a doggy surprise 🙂
There are lots of amusing dog videos around.
I find dogs react to noises like sirens by joining in a howl.
But this one did create some laughter with the Rabbi.
The Barbados Kennel Club’s October and November All Breeds Championship Dog shows are fast approaching and I expect a lot of the exhibitors will go to Waterford with their dogs for handling classes on Sunday mornings. I usually take Rita and Rhapsody and hope that there is some friendly person around who likes dogs and exercise and will run around with one of them for me. 🙂 🙂 while I run the other 🙂
Both Rita and Raps enjoy coming out to socialise and running in the sun helps prepare them for being in the ring on a hot day at show time.
Judges are from the UK and are Steve Hall (judged here already) and Jeff Luscott.
Barbados Dog Training Club Classes have also restarted. I understand they plan to issue “certificates” in agility. These might be just to state the level the dog is at and to achieve it the dog would have to be competent in performing certain tasks for the different levels. I don’t think there is anyone in Barbados who is qualified to judge agility yet but at least, this is a positive start.
Rhapsody is on agility and enjoying herself. And creating laughs at me as even when I do not signal her she seems to do the correct obstacle or jump! And she is definitely enjoying herself. I think she is at what they would call the “Novice” levels. She will do all obstancles and will also do sequence jumping. I believe there are at least 3 sets of agility classes going on.
Dogs enjoy the fun of the jumps and especially the tunnels. The see-saw and the high dog’s walk can be a bit challenging at first. And, of course, the weave poles is known to be the most difficult for the dogs to master.
Barbados Dog Training Club also has obedience classes going on. These would be the Special Beginners, the Novice (CD title) and the Open (CDX).
On the CDX class are a couple of guys who are doing Schutzhund training elsewhere but some of the exercises used for Schutzhund are used for CDX. So there is a Rott., a German Shepherd dog and a Malinois. Nice to see the speed at which they do a recall and also watch them heel.
Rita is on this class but before she can sit the trials for CDX, she has to pass the last leg of the Novice.
Lots of new things for her to work at like the dumb bell, and the drop on the recall. Because she has been exposed to agility, I expect her to do the jumps in CDX easily.
Hope to post pixs. of some of the activities later.

CrownRidge is delighted to announce a litter of Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies due Sept 15th. It will be the first BKC registered litter from imported/frozen semen. The stud was born in South Africa and has 5 breed ring championships as well as a working champ; hunting dog certificate from Germany.
The dam is a UK import and BKC Champion with a C.D. obedience title.
We’ll keep you posted.

The above photos are of the sire (AI with frozen semen used) and the pregnant dam Lily who has to settle for hunting for lizards in Barbados as there are no lions around.

Chanel's head
Chanel, a wire-haired daschund made the Guinness Book of records as the world’s oldest dog; she lived 21 years and died of natural causes at her owners home in the USA.
Looking rather stylish as she wore goggles for her cataracts and sweaters because her skin was sensitive to the cold, she celebrated her last birthday at a dog hotel and spa.
Said to excercise daily, Chanel ate home cooked chicken every day with her dog food.
I am sure that with this publicity, and a Guinness Record, other dog owners may be coming forward to provide a challenge to Chanel’s record.
Here is a link to a pet age calculator.
We know that generally the giant and large breeds like the Saint Bernard, Great Dane, Irish Wolfhound and other large breeds have a shorter life span than the dogs which weigh a lot fewer lbs.
Various calculators have Chanel’s age, in human years, at 113, 120 and 147, and possibly other figures.
Besides genetics, it must also be the excellent care of owners that help their pets to long lives. And just as humans are now living a lot longer, so can pets once they are properly cared.
And, to my Barbadian friend who has Rottweilers and likes to tell me that that breed is very slow to mature and says the breed should be mature at 5 years, by the calculator above, the Rott. would then be 42 years old. This friend of mine likes to enter his Rottweilers in dog conformation shows.
Because there are so few shows in Barbados, a show dog should be a top dog before age 5 in my opinion. Hitting age 5, I would imagine it should look mature, but in the Working Group where gait is very important, it would probably only be a serious competitor for another few years as I don’t see it retaining the top line and muscles of the younger 3 – 4 year old dogs.
And yes, I agree that the Rottweiler and other breeds like the Bullmastiff are “head” breeds and so having a large beautiful head, still in balance with the rest of the body, can push a Rottweiler a long way towards going to the top. And in a young dog, the head might still be developing.
Secrets to Dog Training – Dog Training To Stop Your Dog Behavioral Problems!
Buying a puppy or dog should be accompanied by some thought.
Where is the puppy/dog going to live? Inside or outside?
What is its main purpose? Pet/watch dog/ show dog? Any particular breed? How about a “rescue” dog?
What are its possible associated costs? Nutrition and veterinarian care?
In the case of a family, where a child, has begged for a puppy/dog, who will be responsible for the various tasks such as bathing and feeding the canine?
Regardless of the puppy’s breed, its size, its purpose, a basic understanding of dogs’ behavior and also of dogs’ training is important for all parties involved.
It is advantageous to start training a puppy as early as possible, and in the case of an adult dog, to train it in the areas you wish so that its behavior is acceptable to people.
In Barbados, and elsewhere, there are several dog trainers available. What these trainers teach you is how to train your own puppy/dog.
I find in Barbados a lot of dog training is geared towards obedience training. But there is also the area of solving problems like: aggression, chewing, jumping, separation anxiety, and many other dog problems. There are training classes to teach heeling, sit, down, come and stay. These are useful and important exercises but dog training really should extend beyond those basics. The trainers on the market can also do home visits with individual dogs to address problem areas.
Everyone might not wish or be able to utilise their local resources.
I realise from the e-mails I get from Antigua, St. Lucia and other Caribbean islands, that there is a lot of interest in dogs. Dogs and training should go together.
And, in that case, here is alternative help to assist with having a well trained dog.
And it is FREE: It is a 6 day Mini Dog Training Course
And as shown above you can also obtain a real course in Dog Training, which is shown above, Secrets to Dog Training. There is also a manual on Dog House Training.
And you can also get help with your dog’s health from the below link:

Here’s the video showing the tough toy, looking like Michael Vick, that dogs can enjoy themselves biting and trying to destroy.
Not cheap at US $17.00 but the dogs should enjoy it and possibly animal lovers will pay extra for it than the normal bone shape or another animal shape.
I don’t believe this toy has hit the Barbados pet sections in stores yet and it probably will not.
I am seeing lots of dog toys in supermarkets, rawhide and the squeaky type.
I give my dogs real beef bones, usually once a month.
